137. SPANISH HEAVY INFANTRYMAN
The Spanish kingdoms attached considerable importance to infantry because of the mountainous nature of their lands. They were often issued with strong, lightweight leather shoes or sandals since they marched to battle on foot, any wealthy enough to own horses being automatically expected to serve as cavalrymen.
This man, dating to the early-11th century, wears a short mail corselet and Phrygian-style helmet. Others wore armour identical to that described under 120, 132 and 133, or were unarmoured.
